CPH as SEAMEO CENTRE In 1965, the then Institute of Public Health was designated as a National Centre for Tropical Medicine and Public Health by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). It became the Regional Centre for Public Health, Hospital Administration, and Occupational and Environmental Health in 1993. It is a part of the SEAMEO TROPMED Network with Thailand as Regional Centre for Tropical Medicine; Malaysia as the Regional Centre for Medical Microbiology, Parasitology, and Entomology; and Indonesia as the Regional Centre for Community Nutrition. The network now includes Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Regional Centers serve as venues for education and training in the health sector. For the SEAMEO TROPMED PHILIPPINES, linkages with GTZ (German Agency for Technical Cooperation) had brought forth three phases of a project: Community Health Development (1982-85), Occupational Health (1985-90), and Capability Enhancement (1990-98). The SEAMEO-TROPMED-GTZ Training in Epidemiology Consortium (SEAGTEC) which started in 1993 also involved the Free University of Berlin, Mahidol University and Khon Kaen University. The SEAMEO has had three batches of Master of Science in Epidemiology (Public Health) through modular approach since 1998. The Regional Centre has an on-going GTZ-funded project on hospital management training in Cambodia. At the planning stage is the MS Epidemiology by distance education through a consortium between German, Thai and Philippine universities. Also being planned is an International Health Leadership Program.
